Councillors urge better bus-rail links
BETTER bus services are being demanded by councillors in a bid to cut down congestion at a commuter railway station.
A survey carried out by St Neots town councillors revealed many commuters would leave the car at home, but they do not have bus services to link their homes and the station at the correct time.
Residents living close to St Neots railway station have long complained about the number of cars parked near the station. Many commuters park on streets on or off Longsands Road either to avoid paying a charge or because they cannot find space.
Commuters were questioned by two town councillors last month to ask why they do not use alternative transport. Eighty-eight per cent said they would use a bus if they could, with particular demand for better services from and to Papworth Everard, Cambourne, Little Paxton, Buckden and St Neots town centre.
Research by the two Liberal Democrat councillors found many of the morning bus services arrive just before the trains are due to depart, not leaving commuters enough time to get on board. It also found there are insufficient services to take people home in the evening.
Glenn Edge, Head of Passenger Transport at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "We will look into whether it is possible to make any changes to services after we have fully investigated the data and consulted with operators."
